A Mans Pocket Watch And How The World Used To Be

Tracing the history of a mans pocket watch is sure to provide for some laughs.  But in the culture and period where they were introduced, such a pocket watch (or portable clock, as it was known back then) was an object that represented fortune and fame.

It all started with a clock, which has been in existence since the 12th century.  Then again, people started to find a way by which they could tell the time, regardless of where they are, without having to scamper for an establishment that had a clock displayed in its premises.

The solution?

Believe it or not, the gentlemen of Europe in the early 16th century tried out something that is actually laughable, at least for us during our times.  They actually attached some chains on those big clocks and hung them around their necks.  Yes, we may find that funny right now, but it was a stroke of genius during those days, so much so that watch makers determined a need for those "portable clocks," which eventually became the basis for a mans pocket watch.

And so was born the mans pocket watch, which was small enough to fit in his pocket, and attached to a chain so that it was easy to pull out the same.  The chain also ensured that the pocket watch won't be in danger of getting lost.

The pocket watch immediately became a symbol of haute couture for dignified males from the ruling class.  Pocket watches back then were a status symbol.  Only the wealthy and the famous could afford them, after all, and the working class were left with no recourse but to dream of owning a pocket watch of their own.

To a certain extent, the mans pocket watch also became a symbol of his virility.  Central in one's masculinity is how much a person has established himself in society.  Possessing a pocket watch during those times was testament to how such a person had it made.

Hence, 4 centuries after their introduction to the world, pocket watches remain prized collectibles today.  You'd see auctions for golden verge pocket watches with authentic signatures going for thousands of dollars.  The most puzzling part of the auction is that a lot of people can't stop bidding for the same.

Pocket watches are a part of history.  Even after they have been made obsolete by wristwatches, pocket watches still hold a special place in the hearts of those who are fascinated with how the world used to be.
