Disney Pocket Watch

From The Far East To The West, A Disney Pocket Watch Is A Certified Blockbuster

In my recent trip to Hong Kong, that beautiful island city that was once a British colony, I was surprised to see the hospitable Hong Kong people go gaga over a street merchant who was selling pocket watches with Disney characters as designs.  I never thought that Mickey Mouse and company are popular in the Orient as well (that was, of course, before I realized that Disneyland Hong Kong recently opened its gates late in 2005).  The street merchant was selling factory surplus products, of course, which, though licensed by the official franchisee, the said merchant wasn't authorized to sell.  Yet, people gobbled up his merchandise that cold night in the streets of Kowloon.

This led me to ponder: if the demand for a quasi-bootleg Disney pocket watch was that great, what more the demand for the genuine article?

I studied the subject and discovered what I have always believed was true, that there is dedicated, and passionate market, for a Disney pocket watch.

Now, we are all familiar with the Mickey Mouse wristwatch which was the craze in the 1970s and the 1980s.  This was a wristwatch that had Mickey Mouse's hands pointing to the hours and the minutes of the dial.  The success of this commercial merchandise led to the production of wristwatches featuring Mickey's more popular pals.  Currently, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto and even Winnie the Pooh have wristwatches bearing their image.

But watch makers have decided to capitalize on the popularity of the medium and the license, and today you can find a Disney pocket watch in most watch stores, online and offline.

These pocket watches still have the classic design.  They're still watches in elaborate encasings, attached to a chain which you can clip in your pocket.  However, there have been deviations from the classic design to keep in pace with the changing times.  Currently, there are pocket watches worn like pendants, and they even have the female Disney characters to add color and glamour to their appearance.

The encasings of these pocket watches are beautiful - and that's even an understatement!  Take for example the Mickey Mouse pocket watch is gold tone, featuring what has become the classic Mickey Mouse image with his hands pointing to the time.  The encasing of this model is made of gold, and the surface is engraved with Mickey's logo.  It's more than a steal for its $50 selling price!

Disney characters have become a part of everyone's lives.  We have grown up with them, and each of us has some fond memories of these characters.  Owning a pocket watch displaying their image would make them closer to our hearts.
